Department of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology
Ege University, Faculty of Medicine is in Bornova-Izmir-Turkey. Izmir is the third biggest city in Turkey (population roughly 5 millions), located around the Gulf of Izmir on the western coast of Anatolia.
Our department which was founded in 1963 currently has 9 academicians and 7 trainees.
Ege University Faculty of Medicine, as a tertiary care educational center has 1800+ beds and our clinic has 33 beds 4 of which are negative and positive pressure rooms.
The hospital gives transplantation service of any organ as well as allogeneic and autologous stem cells.
The hospital is the last medical care resort of any severe case in any specialization around the Aegean region (population around 11 miilion) and also serves to patients from other regions of Turkey.
The average daily number of our outpatient clinic is 70 patients/day (HIV, HBV, HCV, urinary tract infections, brucellosis, osteomyelitis etc). The department gives consultation service to all the clinics in the hospital.
The clinical and microbiological research is based mostly on epidemiology and management of multidrug-resistant gram-negative and positive bacterial infections, fungal infections, neutropenic fever, HIV, HBV and HCV, osteomyelitis and meningitis.
The University has a hotel located within 3 km of the hospital in addition to a hotel within the campus of the medical faculty.
The department is an European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (Escmid) Collaborative Center and accepts Escmid members for visits upto 1 month.
